Cameron Diaz is one of the most famous actors around the world. She was born as Cameron Michelle Diaz on 30 August 1972 in San Diego, California. Her parents were originally from Cuba, from where they had come and settled down at Tampa. After living in Tampa for some time, her parents had moved to California and settled in San Diego before Diaz was born. Diaz has one elder sister name Chimene. Despite being born in San Diego, Diaz spent most of her childhood in Long Island and even attended high school there at Long Beach Polytechnic High School. Both of Diaz’s parents are working professionals and have contributed to giving her a comfortable childhood and upbringing. Diego’s father works at the UNOCAL which is an oil company based in California. Her mother works as an export-import agent and has a mixed German and Cherokee ancestry.
Diaz was fond of acting and performing since she was a child and her good looks helped her to get noticed by modeling agents and photographers at a very young age. Diaz started working as a fashion model when she was only sixteen years old and still in high school. She joined the Elite Model Management agency that subsequently helped her to launch her career in Hollywood. While she was modeling, Diaz got the opportunity to tour the world and see new sights and places. She was also featured as the cover girl on Seventeen magazine.
Hollywood was beckoning to the attractive and talented Diaz. So at the age of 21, Diaz auditioned for a role opposite Jim Carrey in the comedy movie The Mask. Despite the fact that she had no formal acting training or experience, Diaz was successful in the auditions and she was signed for the role. Thereafter, she started taking acting lessons so that she would be able to act comfortably in front of the camera. She played a sexy singer on the screen to the best and was instantly made the next sex symbol of Hollywood. Thereafter, she did not look back and made one important decision to act in independent movies instead of big studio productions. This explains why she had a low profile despite giving good performances in her subsequent films like The Last Supper and Feeling Minnesota.
Diaz experienced mainstream commercial success in the late 1990s with the release of My Best Friend’s Wedding and A Life Less Ordinary. This was followed by another successful film in 1998, There’s Something about Mary for which Diaz earned a nomination at the Golden Globe Awards. Commercial success was followed by critical acclaim in the form of her glowing reviews for her work in the movie Being John Malkovich released in 1999. She also did the hugely successful adaptation of Charlie’s Angels. In the 2000s, she became known as the voice behind Princess Fiona in the phenomenally successful animated film series Shrek. She gave the voiceover in all the Shrek sequels. In 2003, she worked in Gangs of New York for which she received another Golden Globe nomination. In 2011, her work in The Green Hornet was much appreciated.
